Beginner’s Guide to Genealogy

Step 1: Identify what information you have, and what you need to find.

Filling out a Family Group Sheet is a good initial way to record what you already know. It will include all the basic information (birth, death, and marriage dates, parents, spouse, residence and occupation) about one family unit. It is also useful when contacting relatives – send them a copy and have them record what they know about their family unit.

Always start with what you know! What you need to find is made clear by the gaps in information in a Family Group Sheet.
